Lindera benzoin

Common Name: Spicebush

Another very shade tolerant shrub found in mesic woods. The small yellow flower blooms in early April before the plant leafs out. Leaf and stem have a very aromatic lemon fragrance when crushed. Fall color is an unbelievable yellow. Fruit, which is 1/2 inch long, is a beautiful scarlet in the fall. The pioneers used the fruit as a spice, hence its name.
